Louise Wins Again!

Congrats to Louise Keoghan for another win, this one at the Paramount Criterium! And to win by such a large margin after two weeks of riding in the mountains in Italy, feasting on gelato every day, consuming wine by the jug and then getting home well under 24 hours before the race, well, we think she's just showing off now.

Alex Welch Podium Shots & Update

Alex Welch on the podium being recognized as stage 4's "Most Aggressive Rider" for his bold move that almost yielded the stage win.

He is still recovering from his horrific stage 5 crash and must remain off his feet for another three weeks to allow his fractured collar bone and hip to heal.

Nine set to represent the U.S. at Junior Road and Track Worlds

Colorado Springs, Colo. (June 30, 2008)—USA Cycling announced today the nine junior athletes that will represent the United States at the upcoming 2008 UCI Junior Road and Track World Championships in Cape Town, South Africa, July 12-20.

Four junior men and two junior women will contest the road events scheduled for July 18-20, Kit Karzen (VRC/NOW MS-Society, Beverly Hills, CA) will contest the Scratch Race and the Madison for the U.S., while Iggy Silva (Rock Racing San Diego, Calif.) will join him for the Madison. Colleen Hayduk (Kutztown, Pa.) will tackle four different events in the women’s ranks, including the 500-meter time trial, match sprint, keirin and scratch race. Defending junior world time trial champion Taylor Phinney (Boulder, Colo.), who will also compete in three events on the track.

Team VRC: NOW-MS Society Concludes Successful Tour of PA

Team VRC: NOW-MS Society Elite U25 team concluded a very successful American Eagle Tour of Pennsylvania (June 24-June 30, 2008) and certainly lived up to the "No Opportunity Wasted" lifestyle approach advocated by its title sponsor (NOW). Highlights of the team's success:

- A rider in both of the breaks that finished clear of the bunch (Adrian Gerrits on Stage 2 and Alex Welch on Stage 4)

- Two top-10 Stage results (Gerrits Stage 2 and Welch Stage 4)

- Podium appearance with Welch's earning Most Aggressive Rider on Stage 4

- A rider in the top-10 from Stage 2 onward (Gerrits finished 9th on GC)

The most disappointing aspect was not being ranked on Team GC because the team only finished two riders (Team GC is determined based on each team's three best riders' combined times). The team lost one rider to the time cut on Stage 2 and three riders to medical issues (Steffanoni on Stage 2 to bladder infection; Martinez to knee issue on Stage 3; and Welch to a terrible crash on Stage 5).

The team was supported by Andy Haggerty, Elle Ullum, Kendall Seyer, and Director Sportif Eddie Monnier. Everyone enjoyed this spectacular event and we're hopeful that our strong performance will earn us an invite back for 2009. We will field an even stronger, more experienced team.

MBGP: Galvan Storms to Consecutive Win in the Masters 35+ | U23 Martinez 3rd Place in the Cat. 2's

Antony Galvan seizes his NOW moment to take his second consecutive win in the Masters 35+ at the prestigious Manhattan Beach Grand Prix.

Also on the podium on the day was U23 Nick Martinez who sprinted to 3rd place in the Category 2 race.

Way to go, guys!

Alex Welch Injured at Tour of Pennsylvania

After lighting up the final climb (mile ~69-72) with a volley of attacks with teammate Adrian Gerrits, Most Aggressive Rider Alex Welch (Team VRC: NOW-MS Society) crashed badly on the 45+ mph descent when another rider crossed over him and took out his front wheel. It looked very serious as he lay in a heap not moving. Tour medical was on the scene almost immediately and got him to UPMC Hospital (Pittsburgh).

The team took shifts visiting Alex after the stage. He was in a lot of pain but very happy to see some familar faces. Alex suffered a broken collar bone, broken hip, and concussion. His helmet was cracked clean through in three separate places, so we are so thankful it's not far worse.

The most recent update (7/1) is Alex is leaving the hospital today and returning to Tulsa. We wish him a speedy and fully recovery!

Team VRC: NOW-MS Society Continues Strong Showing at. American Eagle Tour of Pennsylvania

Team VRC: NOW-MS Society has ridden strongly through 4 of 6 stages at the American Eagle Tour of Pennsylvania and is living up to the "No Opportunity Wasted" lifestyle approach advocated by its title sponsor (NOW). The team has had at least one rider in the lead group on every stage so far, two top-10 stage finishes, earned the Most Aggressive Rider jersey on stage 4, and held a top-10 spot on GC since stage 2. The team is also pleased to note that alumnus rider Eric Barlevav, now a pro with Time Pro, has sprinted to two top 10 finishes (Stage 1B and stage 2).

Adrian Gerrits set the tone for the team when he made the breakaway on stage 2, finished top-10 on the stage and moved into the top-10 on GC. Unfortunately for the team, it lost Chris Steffanoni due to illness and Eric Losak who had an off day and did not make the time cut.

On stage 3, Peter Rennie covered an early move that established a small lead before the first hot spot sprint, where he finished second. After the break was caught, Peter went to work for Adrian and Alex Welch, the two designated GC riders, by setting tempo to the first major climb of the Tour. Adrian and Alex both rode strongly to make the lead group. Alex gave a go at winning the stage but was swarmed before the line. Steven Van Vooren (Johan Bruyneel Cycling Academy) continued his hold on the leader's jersey, which he held since the stage 1A time trial.

With only 3 riders, but two well placed on GC (Adrian now in 6th and Alex in 16th), Stage 4 would be decisive for the team. We decided to let Alex go with any moves knowing that he could sit on because of Adrian's GC position, and then go for the stage win, and possibly move up significantly on GC. That's right, the team is absolutely committed to "insuring" it is invited back in 2009. The first 17.5 miles were almost all uphill, including a 6.6 mile tough climb. KOM Peter Stetina (VMG Felt) again went on the attack and put all but 13 riders in jeopardy. Alex covered the move. Adrian was in the main field, about a 1:30 behind after the first KOM. The sky opened up with a hard rain to add further drama to the moment. The lead group maintained a lead of about 2-2.5 mins over the final leg busting climb. The final 20-mile run in was mostly downhill but had a few short, stinger climbs. Alex was focused on continuing his NOW moment and put in a decisive attack with about a mile to go. He was absolutely flying and gave it his all! Unfortunately, he was caught less than 100 meters from the line and finished 9th on the stage. His bold move earned him the Most Aggressive Rider jersey, giving NOW-MS Society its first podium appearance of the race. Christoff Van Heerden (Konica Minolta) took over the leaders jersey from Van Vooren. Adrian's group finished 2:00 minutes behind, so he slipped slightly to 9th on GC, while Alex moved up to 13th. We came very close to a stage win and had Alex's group been a bit smaller, we would have achieved our objective of also getting him in the top-10, but the podium appearance was a nice benefit. Peter rode impressively and finished ahead of many noted climbers. We expect him to have an opportunity to shine over the next two days.

The stage 5 profile looks like a leg sapping profile of a saw and reportedly has some very steep pitches. It should be another exciting day and we plan to again leave our NOW mark on the stage.
