Team NOW Women/ Men Cat 4 Camp!

Approximately 25 members of the NOW-MS team converged upon the Rolling Thunder Ranch on Friday night. It was hard to count the exact number, because everyone was running around the amazing property like excited kids on Redbull.

Julie has secured an incredible Montana Ranch style house, with two large outdoor stone fireplaces, roasting pits, tiki huts nestled in the trees with a bar and stools, burning torches that lined the paths, a pool, two Jacuzzis, a guest house and a "love shack".

In order to afford the above, we camped out on every available space -- five people to one room in some cases. There were blow up beds everywhere, a tent on the lawn, and sleeping bags on the grass under the stars. It was priceless.

Kit and Antony gave up their weekends to come and coach the teams, which got underway after a team talk on the living room floor at 7:30, and eggs and oatmeal organized by Angela and her kitchen crew. We established a good route for a 3 hour jaunt, which retraced some of the MS ride, and set off through the hills of Ojai at 8:00am.

Doing what you love doing, with a bunch of people you love doing it with, is a pretty hard act to follow. Add to that, clear blue skies, the perfect temperature, and a bunch of riders who are told to "ride how they feel", you have utopia. Under the leadership of Kit we rotated, and attacked our way down the coast for several blissful/sometime painful hours, until we hit the dude ranch once again.

Team talk, scheduling for 09, goal setting and a lot of Sage advice from Kit and Antony, took up some of the afternoon, followed by separate skills clinics for the women's and men's team. The women left the men on the lawn and went off in search of the Garret Lemire Course. The last words we heard were "Okay let's doing some bumping". We didn't ask, but we knew Kit had it under control.

Antony led the charge, which involved less bumping, but loads of diving into corners. It was great to be "racing" again, especially with our new and brilliant U25 team mates. Lauren, Jen-Jo, Kendall Ryan and PC make up the fabulous four, and they certainly lived up to their reputation.

With the promise of good food back at base, we dived the last corner at record speed and rejoined the group of guys, who were recounting stories of wheelies on the lawn and who won the slowest race.

Fuelled by a desire to win at all costs on and off the bike, the fine men and women of NOW-MS continued to do what we do best -- COMPETE. A series of arms wrestles, games of SLIDE (PC and Kit reigning champs), Pictionary and anything else that requires mental and physical strength, the evening was pretty much full of blood, sweat and tears/ice packs.

Cut to the next morning. Rinse and repeat. More drills, more attacks, more of everything we love!!! Clean up, big hugs, glam photos, roll out. End of story -- and what a great story it was.

Karzen Nabs Double Win at Geneva Three Day!

Riding in an open Amateur category that included junior world champions in the Madison, Kit Karzen won BOTH the points race and keirin (plus fine results in a number of other races).

Kit and madison partner Andrew Armstrong (Texas, 26 years-old - first time track racing overseas), are in 6th place overall. Unfortunately, Andrew crashed and they're two laps down on the leaders. They are focused on gaining a lap and moving up at least one spot.

NOW-MS Society Track Day a Huge Hit

New club member Debbie Betts organized and sponsored a NOW-MS Society private session as the ADT Velodrome, the only indoor track in the United States. Over two dozen club members, ranging in skills from first timers to experienced trackies, enjoyed two hours of private track time. We will definitely continue this tradition and are working on a December date. You can sponsor a day for $250. If you're interested, email eddie at velo-fit dot com.

Karzen Wins National Title in Junior Points Race (17-18)

Kit Karzen claimed his first National Championship title as a 17-18 year-old junior by winning the points race tonight. It was a long, hard battle settled on the final sprint. Way to go Kit!!!!!

He also gnabbed a Bronze medal in the Keirin. He is contesting one more individual race (scratch race) and two team events (Team Sprint and Madison) this weekend.

We're proud of you, Kit!

Peter Rennie Delivers VRC's First Ever Win in a Category 1/2 Event

Congrats to U25 Elite Team member Peter Rennie, who delivered the first ever win in a category 1/2 event for Team VRC. He's been knocking on the door this season with several podiums in Pro/1/2 crits, but he finally grabbed the win at the CBR promoted FIAC National Criterium Championships. As Peter is a Kiwi, he did not win the jersey, but we'll take the win nonetheless.

Good on ya, mate! ;-)

Lawrence Novitch Podiums at CBR Final!

"You've come a long way, baby" is all we can say about Lawrence Novitch. He started the year as "one speed Larry" but got on a disciplined Velo-Fit training regime and has become a force to reckon with. He scored his second podium with a fine second place finish in the 40+ 4/5's. He also benefited by outstanding team work from teammates John Velez (3rd), David Adler (6th), Barry Fink, Mike Novitch, and Jens Wallrabe. Great job guyz!!! Photo courtesy of Evan Wischik.

Antony Galvan Wins CBR 30+ BAR Series!

Congrats to Antony "the Galvanizer" for sewing up the series overall in the CBR Best All-around Racer (BAR) series for the 30+. It was a long, hard fought battle against American racing icon Thurlow "Turbo" Rogers. Congrats also to Witek Czulak for policing the breaks and garnering a top-10 on the day. The team was pleased to have Scotty "the Prof" Evans back out to play and he did a fine job setting up Antony for the final sprint, to get the few points not gobbled up by the break (to our advantage, as it prevented any danger of Thurlow nabbing the win on the final day).

Louise Wins Again!

Congrats to Louise Keoghan for another win, this one at the Paramount Criterium! And to win by such a large margin after two weeks of riding in the mountains in Italy, feasting on gelato every day, consuming wine by the jug and then getting home well under 24 hours before the race, well, we think she's just showing off now.

Alex Welch Podium Shots & Update

Alex Welch on the podium being recognized as stage 4's "Most Aggressive Rider" for his bold move that almost yielded the stage win.

He is still recovering from his horrific stage 5 crash and must remain off his feet for another three weeks to allow his fractured collar bone and hip to heal.

Flying Kit Karzen Bound for Junior Worlds

Nine set to represent the U.S. at Junior Road and Track Worlds

Colorado Springs, Colo. (June 30, 2008)—USA Cycling announced today the nine junior athletes that will represent the United States at the upcoming 2008 UCI Junior Road and Track World Championships in Cape Town, South Africa, July 12-20.

Four junior men and two junior women will contest the road events scheduled for July 18-20, Kit Karzen (VRC/NOW MS-Society, Beverly Hills, CA) will contest the Scratch Race and the Madison for the U.S., while Iggy Silva (Rock Racing San Diego, Calif.) will join him for the Madison. Colleen Hayduk (Kutztown, Pa.) will tackle four different events in the women’s ranks, including the 500-meter time trial, match sprint, keirin and scratch race. Defending junior world time trial champion Taylor Phinney (Boulder, Colo.), who will also compete in three events on the track.

Team VRC: NOW-MS Society Concludes Successful Tour of PA

Team VRC: NOW-MS Society Elite U25 team concluded a very successful American Eagle Tour of Pennsylvania (June 24-June 30, 2008) and certainly lived up to the "No Opportunity Wasted" lifestyle approach advocated by its title sponsor (NOW). Highlights of the team's success:

- A rider in both of the breaks that finished clear of the bunch (Adrian Gerrits on Stage 2 and Alex Welch on Stage 4)

- Two top-10 Stage results (Gerrits Stage 2 and Welch Stage 4)

- Podium appearance with Welch's earning Most Aggressive Rider on Stage 4

- A rider in the top-10 from Stage 2 onward (Gerrits finished 9th on GC)

The most disappointing aspect was not being ranked on Team GC because the team only finished two riders (Team GC is determined based on each team's three best riders' combined times). The team lost one rider to the time cut on Stage 2 and three riders to medical issues (Steffanoni on Stage 2 to bladder infection; Martinez to knee issue on Stage 3; and Welch to a terrible crash on Stage 5).

The team was supported by Andy Haggerty, Elle Ullum, Kendall Seyer, and Director Sportif Eddie Monnier. Everyone enjoyed this spectacular event and we're hopeful that our strong performance will earn us an invite back for 2009. We will field an even stronger, more experienced team.

MBGP: Galvan Storms to Consecutive Win in the Masters 35+ | U23 Martinez 3rd Place in the Cat. 2's

Antony Galvan seizes his NOW moment to take his second consecutive win in the Masters 35+ at the prestigious Manhattan Beach Grand Prix.

Also on the podium on the day was U23 Nick Martinez who sprinted to 3rd place in the Category 2 race.

Way to go, guys!

Alex Welch Injured at Tour of Pennsylvania

After lighting up the final climb (mile ~69-72) with a volley of attacks with teammate Adrian Gerrits, Most Aggressive Rider Alex Welch (Team VRC: NOW-MS Society) crashed badly on the 45+ mph descent when another rider crossed over him and took out his front wheel. It looked very serious as he lay in a heap not moving. Tour medical was on the scene almost immediately and got him to UPMC Hospital (Pittsburgh).

The team took shifts visiting Alex after the stage. He was in a lot of pain but very happy to see some familar faces. Alex suffered a broken collar bone, broken hip, and concussion. His helmet was cracked clean through in three separate places, so we are so thankful it's not far worse.

The most recent update (7/1) is Alex is leaving the hospital today and returning to Tulsa. We wish him a speedy and fully recovery!

Team VRC: NOW-MS Society Continues Strong Showing at. American Eagle Tour of Pennsylvania

Team VRC: NOW-MS Society has ridden strongly through 4 of 6 stages at the American Eagle Tour of Pennsylvania and is living up to the "No Opportunity Wasted" lifestyle approach advocated by its title sponsor (NOW). The team has had at least one rider in the lead group on every stage so far, two top-10 stage finishes, earned the Most Aggressive Rider jersey on stage 4, and held a top-10 spot on GC since stage 2. The team is also pleased to note that alumnus rider Eric Barlevav, now a pro with Time Pro, has sprinted to two top 10 finishes (Stage 1B and stage 2).

Adrian Gerrits set the tone for the team when he made the breakaway on stage 2, finished top-10 on the stage and moved into the top-10 on GC. Unfortunately for the team, it lost Chris Steffanoni due to illness and Eric Losak who had an off day and did not make the time cut.

On stage 3, Peter Rennie covered an early move that established a small lead before the first hot spot sprint, where he finished second. After the break was caught, Peter went to work for Adrian and Alex Welch, the two designated GC riders, by setting tempo to the first major climb of the Tour. Adrian and Alex both rode strongly to make the lead group. Alex gave a go at winning the stage but was swarmed before the line. Steven Van Vooren (Johan Bruyneel Cycling Academy) continued his hold on the leader's jersey, which he held since the stage 1A time trial.

With only 3 riders, but two well placed on GC (Adrian now in 6th and Alex in 16th), Stage 4 would be decisive for the team. We decided to let Alex go with any moves knowing that he could sit on because of Adrian's GC position, and then go for the stage win, and possibly move up significantly on GC. That's right, the team is absolutely committed to "insuring" it is invited back in 2009. The first 17.5 miles were almost all uphill, including a 6.6 mile tough climb. KOM Peter Stetina (VMG Felt) again went on the attack and put all but 13 riders in jeopardy. Alex covered the move. Adrian was in the main field, about a 1:30 behind after the first KOM. The sky opened up with a hard rain to add further drama to the moment. The lead group maintained a lead of about 2-2.5 mins over the final leg busting climb. The final 20-mile run in was mostly downhill but had a few short, stinger climbs. Alex was focused on continuing his NOW moment and put in a decisive attack with about a mile to go. He was absolutely flying and gave it his all! Unfortunately, he was caught less than 100 meters from the line and finished 9th on the stage. His bold move earned him the Most Aggressive Rider jersey, giving NOW-MS Society its first podium appearance of the race. Christoff Van Heerden (Konica Minolta) took over the leaders jersey from Van Vooren. Adrian's group finished 2:00 minutes behind, so he slipped slightly to 9th on GC, while Alex moved up to 13th. We came very close to a stage win and had Alex's group been a bit smaller, we would have achieved our objective of also getting him in the top-10, but the podium appearance was a nice benefit. Peter rode impressively and finished ahead of many noted climbers. We expect him to have an opportunity to shine over the next two days.

The stage 5 profile looks like a leg sapping profile of a saw and reportedly has some very steep pitches. It should be another exciting day and we plan to again leave our NOW mark on the stage.

TOUR OF PA TEAM SELECTION IS COMPLETE!

Final selection for the inaugural American Eagle Outfitters Tour of Pennsylvania Presented By Highmark Healthy High 5® is complete. Making the cut for this first-of-its kind under-25 cycling stage race are 20 of the world’s best development squads, each looking to make its mark during a daunting six-day journey from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, June 24-29. No less than nine countries and five continents – North and South America, Australia, Africa and Europe -- will be represented in the 120-rider field.
Notable formations include the Belgian-based Johan Bruyneel Cycling Academy team, South Africa’s Konica Minolta Continental Cycling Team, and Colorado-based VMG-Felt, the development arm of Slipstream-Chipotle , one of two teams slated to represent America at this year’s Tour de France.
The final team granted entry into this prestigious race was Team VRC/NOW-MS Society, a Los Angeles-based squad that’s dedicated to helping develop tomorrow’s top pros and raising awareness about multiple sclerosis. Local hopes rest with Pennsylvania’s entry, the PA Lightning.
Beginning on hallowed cycling ground in Philadelphia, the American Eagle Outfitters Tour of Pennsylvania follows a historically rich route that passes through towns and countryside that roughly follow Forbes Road (U.S. 30), which was forged in 1758 by British General John Forbes and Colonel George Washington. The race culminates six days later in Pittsburgh as part of the city’s 250th anniversary celebration.
Seven Pennsylvania towns and cities will host the official race starts and finishes, with communities along the way gaining a first-hand look at the world’s best young talent in the kind of competition that is normally found only in Europe. In addition to Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, the host cities include Downingtown, Carlisle, Camp Hill, Bedford, Latrobe and Ligonier.
The Tour of Pennsylvania offers $150,000 in total prize money, making it the richest in the world for under-25-class riders. It’s also the only UCI sanctioned race in the U.S. geared specifically to under-25 riders. That combination stimulated worldwide interest and applications from several dozen teams followed. But only a select 20 made the final cut of what will be a historic six days of racing.

Kit Adds Another Podium for U25 Cat. 3's

Kit Karzen was en route to winning the Torrance Cat. 3 race but was pushed (practically slammed) to the curb and finished 3rd. Adam Masters also in top-10 with an 8th place finish. The duo even tried to get away together earlier but the field had other ideas.

Kit won the field sprint for 3rd in the Junior 17/18 race.

Sea Otter Update

Our own Chris Steffanoni fought through "dead legs" to finish 3.rd in the U23
category (22nd overall) in Friday's brutal Sea Otter Road Race (P/1 and U23's).
Teammate Peter Rennie also claimed dead legs and decided to save something for
tomorrow's challenging circuit race.

Congrats also to VRC Alums Sergio Hernandez (Rock Racing) who finished 3rd and
teammate and fellow VRC alum Jeremiah Wiscovitch who finished 15th.
